When Leopard came out, I remember seeing whole rows of brand new shiny aluminum iMacs at the university library with the login screens missing. You had to reboot to get the login screen to reappear. One day, out of curiosity, I tried typing in my login and password into a screen with no login showing. The iMac logged me in! The login screen still worked -- you just couldn't see it.
